There’s a place, atop Monte Orlando, where time seems to stand still. Among maritime pines and dramatic sea cliffs rises the mausoleum of Lucius Munatius Plancus, one of the most fascinating and least-known Roman relics in Lazio. Built over two thousand years ago, this imposing circular monument tells the story of a man who was a consul, governor, and friend of Julius Caesar. But it also tells the story of Gaeta, its strategic position, and its timeless beauty.
A tomb between gods and sea
The mausoleum stands 168 meters above sea level, at the highest point of Monte Orlando, within the Riviera di Ulisse Regional Park. From here, the view stretches across the Pontine Islands, the gulf, and the cliffs—an absolutely breathtaking panorama.
This is where Lucius Munatius Plancus chose to be buried. But who exactly was he?
Plancus was a key figure of the Roman Republic. He served as consul in 42 BC, founded the cities of Lugdunum (modern Lyon) and Augusta Raurica (near Basel), and was an ally of Caesar and later Augustus. His career spanned one of the most turbulent eras of Roman history, and yet he chose Gaeta as his eternal resting place.
Architecture and secrets
The monument is circular, 29 meters in diameter, and built using local limestone blocks. At the center stood the funerary chamber, now partially collapsed but still accessible. The original inscription, still visible, proudly displays his name and titles—etched with a precision that has defied the centuries.
One of the most fascinating curiosities is that during World War II, the structure was used as a lookout and military defense point, due to its strategic position. A tomb turned fortress: here, history overlaps like the waves below.

The mausoleum can be reached on foot via scenic trails across Monte Orlando, starting from the medieval district of Gaeta. The climb is not too demanding and rewards visitors with unforgettable views. Entry is free, and you may even find local volunteers offering stories and lesser-known facts.
The visit can be combined with the nearby Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity (Montagna Spaccata) and the Bourbon Batteries. A true journey through time, where nature, faith, and military history meet.
