The legend of the keys and ancient tales
The name “Well of the Keys” comes from a local legend: sailors from Gaeta would throw the keys to their wives’ chastity belts into the well before setting sail on long voyages. A symbolic gesture, part romantic and part rebellious, that left this place wrapped in mystery.
Other darker versions say that rebellious slaves were thrown into the abyss—if they survived, they would gain their freedom. Whether myth or memory, the stories still echo through the stone.

The best way to discover the Devil’s Well is by sea. Tours by boat or kayak depart from Serapo Beach and often include stops at the Grotta del Turco and the Montagna Spaccata, with time for snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of the Riviera di Ulisse.
There are also narrow paths along the cliffs that allow access by land, but only for experienced hikers. These routes include rocky terrain and exposed stretches, so it’s essential to wear proper footwear and attempt them only in calm sea conditions.
